Deburred
and Edge Finished HS Rear Spar Parts -
I deburred all holes in the HS Rear Spar parts and smoothed/rounded
the edges. I am still waiting to hear
back from Van's on the HS609PP gouges. I also received
the wrong HS710 part with my kit, so I am waiting on the
new
one to arrive before I get started on the HS Front Spar. |

Heard
Back from Van's on the HS609PP Gouges -
see the response from Bruce Reynolds on the gouges in the
HS609PP. In case you can't open it, he basically said their
engineering guys were not worried about them. His recommendation
was to remove the gouges, and if I did not have to remove
more that 0.015" it was ok. He said he would send a new HS609PP
if I needed to go deeper than that. |

More
edge finishing -
I completed edge finishing the second HS702 (HS front spar).
The edge finishing is taking me a long time, but I am taking
my time and doing it right. I am probably over doing it,
but that is better than having a crack/split down the road. |

Practiced
machine countersinking and dimpling -
I used the first HS710
(incorrect one) I got with my kit and rivited a piece of
sheet aluminum to it. I did as the plans called for and
went two clicks past flush and there still seemed to be
a slight gap between the sheet and HS710. E-mailed Bruce
Reynolds about it and here is
his response. I will stick with two clicks past flush. |

Worked
on the HS ribs -
I edge prepped the HS706, HS707, and HS405 ribs. There has
to be a faster way of doing this! Again, I am trying to
make them perfect. |

left HS stab work -
Disassembled the left HS skeleton and deburred HS707, HS706,
HS405, HS404, HS708, HS710, HS714, and started deburring
HS601PP. |

More
left HS stab work & started right HS -
Deburred top (inside) of HS601PP, deburred top and bottom
of HS601PP, and assembled and drilled the right HS stabilizer
skeleton using HS601PP as a drill guide. No pics taken
due similarity of left and right HS. |

More
right HS stab work -
Drilled HS710 and HS714 to HS702, and HS404/HS405 to HS702 on
the right HS. Disassembled right HS skeleton in preparation
for deburring and dimpling parts. |

holes in the lower. |

More
work on the VS Skin -
I removed the VS skin from the skeleton, adjusted the flanges
on the ribs, reinstalled the skin, and match drilled the
skin to the skeleton. |

Edge
prepped the rudder stiffeners -
Used my 3M 7A wheel to shape and take the rough edges off and
then used my Weiler arbor discs to finish the edges. Works
great! |

Started
edge prepping VS801PP -
Used a 1" 3M 7A cutting & polishing wheel in my die grinder to
start prepping the edges of the vertical stab skin. Works
pretty good, you just need to be careful. |

More
edge prep -
Finished edge prep on HS601PP right and edge prepped HS601PP
left. I know this edge prep stuff is taking me a long time,
but I am doing it right. If it seems like I am working
out of order it is because I am. It is too cold get any
priming done, so I am going to do everything I can so I
can prime in the warm months and rivet when it is cold. |

Ordered
Primer Today -
OK...I finally made my decison on how to prep and prime my
parts. I ordered one gallon of PreKote today along with
two gallons
of the AKZO Nobel quick drying epoxy primer from Aircraft
Spruce. Alumiprep
and Alodine will make too much hazardous waste, so I
will prep with the PreKote, which won't kill me or the
environment,
and I will follow with the Zinc Chromate primer. I also
purchased a couple of rattle cans of Tempo Zinc Chromate
primer and an Alodine Touch-N-Prep pen for touch up work.
I have used MPro-7 gun cleaner from Pantheon
Chemical and
I have had pretty good luck with it, so I figure I'll
try the PreKote. The Air Force has adopted it and Boeing
has
approved it. I
imagine others will as the EPA cracks down.
