7/24/04 OSHKOSH Trip 2004

I started taking flying lessons on 9/6/03 and I set a goal once I started taking lessons that I would be done in time for Jennifer and I to fly to Air Venture 2004. I did my check ride on 6/4/04 and the plans were on for OSHKOSH. I did my flight training at ACE Pilot Training in Allentown, PA (ABE), so we arranged to rent one of their Cherokee 140s for the trip. My folks have been to OSH 8 or 10 times, I attended with them in 1986 (drove from N.C.), but this was the first opportunity I would have to fly into OSH. My folks have a Comanche 250 and were flying in from Livingston, TX (00R), so we decided to meet in Dekalb, IL (DKB), and fly in together. A day has not gone by since we got back that I have not thought about the trip. We had a fantastic time and it was the experience of a lifetime!

Climbing out of DKB - This is a picture of Jennifer and I departing DKB which was our last stop before OSH. We forgot to charge the camera battery before we left Allentown, so we were not able to get any pictures of the Comanche (bummer). I also like to take a picture on final of every airport I land at (something I learned from Matt Kemp at ACE) and of all of them I hate it most we did not get one on final at Oshkosh. There will be other opportunities! If you look in the back we had the 140 at gross. It seems as though everyone that comes in to camp is either at gross, or "SLIGHTLY" over gross.

En Route to OSH - It really was great to be able to fly in with my folks. They had already experienced the OSH arrival, so it definitely helped to calm my nerves some. I must admit though, I was getting a little nervous at this point. It was definitely tough for the Comanche to fly chase for the 140...I don't think my Dad had practiced that much slow flight in a long time.

OSH Campsite - This was our campsite in the GA camping section. You definitely have not experienced OSH until you have camped out for the week. What a blast it was. We were definitely ready to sleep in our own bed when we got home. A week in a tent was just long enough for me. As you can see the prop makes a good towel rack.

Front Row Seats on the 9/27 Flight Line - This was by far the most fun part of the OSH experience. We probably spent more time on the flight line listening to ATC and watching planes land than we did looking at airplanes. If you are ever at OSH and have the opportunity to do it, spend some time on the flight line with a radio. I guarantee you will be better prepared for arriving and departing OSH if you do it. As you can see Ed (my Dad) takes this very seriously. ;-)

Jennifer & Dalton in Front of the World's Busiest Control Tower - It is all truth. It is busy and these controllers are the best. Did I mention how much fun it was to listen in on the radio? I can't wait to go back!!

Jennfier Taking a Ride in the EAA Breezy - The EAA was giving free rides around the grounds in a breezy. They had 3 of them operating at the same time. I am extremely lucky to have a wife and partner that enjoys flying. She even gets motion sick sometimes, but she toughs it out and I appreciate her for that. She wants me to build a breezy...I wonder why?

RV-10 Cockpit - This is as close as we could get to getting a ride in an RV-10. I tell you, it really is big on the inside. Definitely big enough for 4 real adults. If money was no object, I would most likely be building one. The RV-7A is definitely a good compromise.

N15037 on the Roll out of OSH - Man did we hate to leave. At least I got a picture on departure. Thanks Mom! Did I mention how much fun we had? I did not realize until I got back, but it took 20% of my total flight experience to get there and back...what a blast! I had 68 total hours when we left.

En Route back to Allentown - Sunburned and 7.5 hours back to Allentown, but no worse for the wear. See you next year!

Houston...the Eagle has Landed - N5964P back in the hangar at 00R. What a flight crew! See what I mean about loading them up! My mom can definitely get 10 lbs in a 5 lb sack. That young "Jet" pilot looking guy with them is Stu. He works with my folks at Honeywell, and is a glider pilot. He is hooked now...as my Dad would say...he has touched the tar baby. The last I heard, Stu is transferring to Atlanta, and informed the relocation lady that he had to either live at an airpark, or live within 5 miles of an airport. Another one bites the dust.
