Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the Left Tie-down
Bracket - Countersunk the #6 and #8 screw
holes in the W706 bottom flange. Here is a shot of
one of the #6 and #8 holes countersunk. The single
flute countersink cutter gives real nice results. I
used a 3-flute cutter on a test piece and the results
were no where near as good.

Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the Left
Tie-down Bracket -
Another
shot of the #6 and #8 holes. My method for doing
the countersink is to hold the countersink
cage in my left (gloved) hand so I can see through
the window in the cage. This allows me to hold
it in place and keep it nice and
flat
on
the
flange for the countersink and easily see what is
going on. I use my pneumatic drill at full speed
to make the
countersink
with
a piloted
single flute countersink. Some say slow is better,
but I found the CS cutter jumped around to much in
the hole at slower speeds, so I used full speed with
light to medium pressure.

Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the Left
Tie-down Bracket - A
shot of some more of the #8 holes. I used
the calipers to check each countersink
after it was done to make sure I got full
depth. I also used Boelube on the CS cutter
for each countersink run.

Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the
Left Tie-down Bracket - Here
is a shot of the top flange on W706R
with all of the holes completed. Once
they were all done, I roughed them up
with a scotch brite pad and alodined
the holes with the alodine touch and
prep pen.

Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the
Left Tie-down Bracket - Clamped
W731L to W706L in preparation for drilling
W731L. I did not drill the W726 spacers
through W731L at this point. Only the
bracket to spar bolt holes were drilled.

Countersunk
W706R Screw Holes and Started on the
Left Tie-down Bracket - We
bought these space age pillows about
3 years ago and I used one of them
for one night and
I had to go to the chiropractor
for a month. They work good
for the airplane though! Allows me
to get to both sides of the spar web
at the same time.
