Another RV-7 Project with Empennage and Wing Kit -
My
Dad called me and told me about an auction he saw on e-Bay
for an RV-7 project. The sale included an empennage kit
that
was
about 85% complete and a wing kit that was untouched with
the exception of un-crating. The guy who was selling it lived
in Latrobe, PA and there were several inquiries regarding
the sale, but he was not willing to crate it back up to ship
it. If you bought it you had to go pick it up. The minimum opening
bid was $3999.99 and the project had been on aution for
15.5 days out of a 16 day auction with no bids. Latrobe,
PA is only about 4.5 hours from Easton, PA but I
had to clear
it with the wife. I called her and got her voice mail,
but I proceeded to tell her about it and at the end
of the
message I said...oh by the way...I just clicked the button
to place the bid so call me if you don't want me to buy
it :-). As it turned out I was the only bidder at $3999.99 so
I had to buy it even if the wife said no. I had to do
some fast talking, so I pulled a page from her book and
used the "guess how much I saved" tactic. I didn't get
in too much trouble since I got a good deal. Wing kits
were going for $5800 at the time and it cost me about
$300 to go pick it up and bring it back. When I got the
stuff back home I inventoried it and the only thing missing
was a 1 foot $1.98 piece of aluminum tubing. I have my
wings! |

Another RV-7 Project with Empennage and Wing Kit - I
didn't take pictures of all of the stuff I bought,
but here is a picture of the main spar center section
(yellow anodized parts), the wing ribs, some rear wing
spars, the wing tip lens covers, and the landing lights
(boxes lower right). The only airframe parts that are
anodized are the main spars and the main spar center
section (the part the wings bolt to). This is for long
term corrosion protection, but it reduces the life
of the wing spars by about half. This drops the useful
life down to about 20,000 hours.

Another RV-7 Project with Empennage and
Wing Kit - The
wings come with a hundred little brown lunch
bags full of parts...literally. The two gray
storage bins have all of the small pieces
and parts that come with the wing kit. The
blue ones have the stuff for my empennage
kit.

Another RV-7 Project with Empennage and
Wing Kit - Nothing
special to show here, just a wide shot
of my drawing set up. I didn't mention
it before, but I am going to use my empennage
kit
for my "first" plane. When I purchased
the other project, I re-registered the
kit
in
my name, so now I can build two ;-).
